Back by popular demand! The River Center Film Series presents The Politics of Beaut with film director John de Graaf
PBS Film Director John de Graaf will be at the River Center for the screening of his film, The Politics of Beauty, an acclaimed 2023 documentary about Stewart Udall, the charismatic former Secretary of the Department of Interior under presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson in the 1960s.
We’ll also be screening the trailer for John’s newest film (not yet released), “Loyal to the Truth, Katharine Lee Bates and the story of America the Beautiful.”
Achievements during Stewart Udall’s career include The Wilderness Bill, the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act, the Land and Water Conservation Fund, expansion of the National Park System, and, among many other conservation projects, the establishment of 56 wildlife refuges.
Meticulously researched, the film includes archival footage filmed during the Kennedy and Johnson administrations and interviews with current Secretary of the Dept. of Interior, Deb Haaland; former Arizona governor and Secretary of Interior, Bruce Babbitt; former U.S. Senator, Gordon Smith (R); Navajo artist, Shonto Begay; former National Park Service director, Robert Stanton; and others
The River Center’s film series is a collaboration with the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribal Library.
