Every year, hundreds of students load up onto buses and head out to experience the Dungeness River Nature Center. For many, it’s more than just a field trip, it’s a chance to connect with the river, explore nature, and think like scientists.

Take the fifth graders who visited us:

• They waded into the Dungeness River, collecting mayflies and stoneflies to determine if it’s a healthy salmon habitat.
• They used tools like sifters and charts to examine rocks and water, learning the role of macroinvertebrates in the ecosystem.
• For some, it was their very first encounter with the Dungeness River.

Moments like these spark a lifelong love for nature.
