Discovery Awaits…
Do you enjoy watching birds come to you feeder? Want to contribute to a continental data-set of bird distribution and abundance? If so, you might want to know more about Project FeederWatch! This citizen-science survey is managed by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Participating in it will “turn your love of feeding birds into scientific discoveries.” The season for collecting FeederWatch data began on Sat., Nov. 14, and will run through April 9. You can sign up any time before April to track birds around your own home, while helping scientists piece together more accurate population maps. The data tells us where birds are, where they are not, and can indicate declines or growth of particular species. With this information, scientists can look further into the factors that might have caused the changes in population. The schedule is flexible, count birds for as long as you want, when you want, and enter your data online! Beat the pandemic stay-at-home blues by collecting data on the birds that visit your yard this winter, implement some of Carolyn Wilcox’s Birdscaping techniques (link to sign up below), and see how your improved bird habitat affects your data set next winter! On Wed. Nov. 18th @ 4pm Carolyn will present “Birdscaping Part 2.” She will teach about the importance of snags/dead trees in your yard, nestbox design, landscape planning, and how to deal with invasive plants. Don’t miss this great opportunity to learn how to make your yard more bird friendly! |
