The Politics of Beauty is a newly released documentary on Stewart Udall, the charismatic former Secretary of the Department of Interior under presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson.
Achievements during Udall’s career include The Wilderness Bill, The Wild and Scenic Rivers Act, the Land and Water Conservation Fund, expansion of the National Park System, and, among many other conservation projects, establishment of 56 wildlife refuges.
Meticulously researched, the film includes archival footage filmed during the Kennedy and Johnson administrations and interviews with current Secretary of the Dept. of Interior, Deb Haaland; the former Arizona governor and Secretary of Interior, Bruce Babbitt; former U.S. Senator, Gordon Smith (R); Navajo artist, Shonto Begay; former National Park Service director, Robert Stanton; and others.
First shown at Interior in January 2023 with Haaland and Dept. of Interior staff attending, the film is now making the rounds of film festivals, nationally.
The River Center’s screening is one of the first times the film has been screened in Washington State.
