Our current Backyard Birding series continues in May with veteran birder Ken Wiersema presenting a program on bird insectivores—birds that feed mainly on insects, spiders, and invertebrates. Ken prepared this seminar as a companion to OPAS’s May 11th Clallam County Birdathon and World Migratory Bird Day. This year, the theme for World Migratory Bird Day focuses on the vital importance of insects to birds—that is, the availability of protein-rich insects at the right times in each annual cycle to feed chicks at their nesting destinations and to fuel their migratory flights. Worldwide insect populations are in decline due in part to pesticides, herbicides, climate change, industrialized agriculture, and habitat degradation. This decline poses an ever-increasing threat to insect-eating birds.

Please join us for this program, presented by Backyard Birding for the first time. Come learn with us what we each can do in our own properties, as well as in our community, to support the essential synergies among birds, plants, and insects while we increase our understanding and enjoyment of Birds!

Please note the special start time of 10:30 a.m. to accommodate those who wish to attend the Master Gardeners Annual Plant Sale before joining us for Backyard Birding.
