Seedbomb Stand
Come get your “seedbombs!” Don’t worry, they don’t explode, they just germinate!
Seedbombs are a mixture of compost, clay and (native) seeds. Humans can assist nature in seed dispersal by tossing or dropping seedbombs in barren or unused areas.
The concept of seedbombing is an ancient Japanese practice called Tsuchi Dango, which translates to “earth dumpling.” In more recent times, Masanobu Fukuoka, an influential Japanese farmer and philosopher, has incorporated his ancestral gardening methods into his own initiative of rehabilitating land, and in doing so, began an international movement.
Introducing native vegetation to your own land not only provides color and beauty but offers food and shelter for our native pollinators. Native plants can also help conserve resources as they require less water and fertilizer than non-native species. (Exotic species can outcompete native plants, become invasive, and not provide proper food and habitat to our local wildlife. Please select native plants whenever possible!)
Masanobu Fukuoka’s teachings within the natural agriculture movement have inspired many, including us here at the River Center! We have created seedbombs with native seeds from Northwest Meadowscapes to help you spread beautiful pollinator-friendly flowers to parts of your yard that could use some extra color and life.
Head down to Railroad Bridge Park’s picnic shelter adjacent to the bridge on Wed, Oct 14 , 10am-4pm (masks required) to pick up your seed bombs and support the River Center. Seedbombs are $5 each, or you can go with the bargain deal of 5 for $20.
We will have multiple options with different species mixed especially for the type of land you’d like to toss them on. A River Center staff member will be there to help you to choose the perfect bomb.
Fall is a great time to plant wildflower seeds, as the soil is still warm and water will soon be abundant.
If you would like to purchase seedbombs but cannot make it on Wednesday, please respond to this email and we will figure out another time!
