Raccoons: Surving and Thriving

In a world with a changing climate, altered landscape, habitat loss and fragmentation, many of the vulnerable species we share our home with are struggling to adapt fast enough to ensure survival. Understanding and addressing these threats is vital to protect biodiversity on this planet.
Certain species, on the other hand, are not only surviving, but thriving in this rapidly changing world. Raccoons are an example of an animal that flipped the script and quickly adapted to the expanding human landscape. We humans have moved into the territory of other animals quite successfully and instead of running away, raccoons are sticking around.
How do they do it? What physical and behavioral adaptations do they possess that has made them so widespread, abundant, and successful? Where did they come from and who are they related to? Do they really “wash” their food??
All of these answers and more will be included in our next virtual learning program.
Join us tomorrow, Wed. Sept. 23rd @ 4pm when Education Coordinator Jenna Ziogas takes a deep dive into the lives of the intelligent, creative, and adaptable raccoons.
