Peabody Creek Trail Field Trip

Leader: Kathy McCoy

Date and Time: Sunday, May 11, 2025, 8:30 am – 12:30 pm

Participant limit: 10 – Registration required.

Signed Liability Form required (see information below).

Cost: Free

Meeting Place: Meet at the Olympic National Park Visitors Center parking lot at 3002 Mount Angeles Road, at the end of Race Street at 8:30 am. A National Park Pass is not required for the parking lot.

Features: We are going on a bird/nature walk on the Peabody Creek trail. It’s a 5.2 mile round trip, up Peabody Creek and back. I won’t make any promises about what birds will be present, but we might spot our resident Common Ravens, Steller’s Jays, Northern Flickers, Oregon Juncos, Song Sparrows, Pacific Wrens, Townsend’s Warblers, Brown Creepers, Golden-Crowned Kinglets, and both chickadee species. The resident birds should be on territory and defending, so we should hear as well as see them. Migrating species are also on the move, which means there’s a chance to spot some unexpected visitors! The local raptors include Bald Eagles, Cooper’s Hawks, Sharp-shinned Hawks, and merlins, but I will not make any promises on these guys. We will be stopping for plants, chipmunks, salamanders, and snakes as well as birds, so get your naturalist hat on.

Let’s come together to celebrate the wonders of Olympic National Park, the incredible public lands we all cherish, and the dedicated people who work tirelessly to protect them.

Special requirements: You must wear shoes with good tread, and I would recommend no fancy clothes; the trail is muddy and slippery in spots, and slipping and sitting down is a real possibility.

Contact information: Kathy McCoy (208) 921-1340. Text or call if you have questions!

Liability Form: We ask field trip participants to sign a liability release form on or before the day of the trip. You can eSign the liability release form by clicking here. You can also review, download, and print the form in advance by visiting the Field Trips page on the OPAS website or clicking here. This signed form will be good for future field trips.
