Quiet Waters Racing

QWR Taking the Podium at First Race

Our Mission: Quiet Water Racing is a mountain bike team that helps raise environmental awareness and money for the educational programs of the Dungeness River Audubon Center along with building a long needed rapport with environmental groups and mountain bikers.

Helps us Find a New Name! Before August 2010 name Quiet Waters Racing fit because that is what "Sequim" meant but everything can change. A linguist says that it now means "good place to shoot" and not quiet waters, in the S'klallam language(read more about the change here). Doesn't quite fit our race team anymore so we will be changing our name. Have a suggestion of what to rename it, e-mail your suggestions to rctech@olympus.net

Why Should You Sponsor Quiet Waters Racing? We believe that one of the most valuable things we can do for the next generation is to give them meaningful experiences in the outdoors. When you sponsor one of our riders or the whole team you are paying for those experiences not our race fees or costs. Money donated to Quiet Waters Racing will be used to bring school aged children to the Dungeness River Audubon Center for a meaningful watershed experience.

Our Business Sponsors: We are so thankful that the following businesses have pledged their support for our team.

Mervin Manufacturing the worlds most environmental snowboard factory is the leading designer and manufacturer of snowboarding and skateboarding products BUILT IN THE USA by people who ride them.

Voyles Insurance is a Farmers Insurance agency which serves the majestic Olympic Peninsula and recognizes the importance of introducing all generations to the wonders of the great outdoors.

Mikes Bikes is a dealer of Specialized and Surly bicycles, as well as Terra Trike recumbent tricycles. You can find any kind of bicycle to suit your needs, from kid’s tricycles, to comfort bikes, to high-end road and mountain bikes.

Events and Races: The following is a list of the major races we are training for and will be representing Quiet Waters Racing.

Race Results

Stottlemeyer 60, Port Gamble, May 1 – The first race of the season was a long one at roughly 60 miles made up of 4 laps of technical, rooty single track and minimal logging roads. Laura finished 4th among women. Powell’s race ended about 40 miles in when he was sitting securely in 4th, fighting his way up, when his derailer was ripped off by a tall root (ironically on a section of the course named Derailer).

Dirty Dozen, Port Gamble, May 9 – Back to Port Gamble for a roughly 15 mile race, Powell, Greg and Laura all had successful races. Powell and Greg finished 1st and 2nd respectively in the men’s sport class under 35 (Powell even rode with a broken pedal he discovered 30 seconds before the race start). Laura was first overall woman in the sport class.

24 Hours Round the Clock, Spokane, May 29-30 – Quiet Waters Racing finished one spot off the podium for the second year in a row despite completing two more laps in the 5 person coed division; 21 laps this year. Great performances were seen by all, Powell, Greg, Adrian, Laura and an especially awesome effort by Suzanne in her first ever mountain bike race. Hopefully next year we will finally make the podium.

Test of Endurance, Blodgett, OR, June 20 – Powell and Laura headed south for 50 miles of slick, sticky, nasty mud on fire roads and single track with over 8,000 feet of climbing. Powell came in fourth among cat 2 men despite taking a 20 minute detour (wrong turn) and Laura was 4th among cat 1 women. Our jerseys are still not clean from this mudfest.

White River Revival, Greenwater, July 10 – Twenty miles of beautiful, twisty and technical singletrack (okay, and some fireroad climbing) on a exceptionally sunny day outside of Mount Ranier yielded some great results for Powell and Laura. Despite an epic ride in the Tanum the day before, Powell won the men’s under 35 sport race and Laura was 2nd overall sport woman (by at most a second or two).

Cascade Cream Puff, Oakridge, OR, July 11 – Greg headed to Oakridge to race in the notorious Cascade Cream Puff. After 90 miles and 16,000 feet of climbing, he had to drop out due to an injury. But don’t worry, he will redeem himself at High Cascade 100 in Bend in a month.

Padden Mt. Pedal, Bellingham, July 18 – Laura headed up to Bellingham alone for this one and was second overall in the women’s sport class.

High Cascade 100, Bend, OR, August 7 – This was the highlight of the summer mountain biking season for Powell, Greg and Laura. The riding was heavy on singletrack, and beautiful scenery. What afantastic course and great organization by Mike Ripley. They all finished with no mechanicals or injuries. Powell and Greg were the top two cat 2 men under 35 and Laura was the 13th female finisher overall.

Stewardship and Trail Work: If you use it you should help take care of it. At least that is what we think! When starting Quiet Waters Racing we thought that it was important to make stewardship of single-track trails part of our mission. In May 2010 we will start our first trail project that will include removing invasive species and repairing a trail that gets very wet and wide during the winter.
